"Make yourself at home. I'll show you to your room so you can get settled in," he said when she awoke and started moving around again.

"Thank you," Max said, following him through an arched doorway and along a winding hallway to a bedroom near the back of the house.

Her room was spacious and bright, decorated in calming shades of blue. A large four-poster bed dominated the space, piled high with blankets and pillows.

"I hope this will be comfortable for you." Rehobeth lingered in the doorway, watching her with an unreadable expression. "If there's anything you need, just let me know. I have to leave again soon, but I brought your car over while you slept. I’m also leaving my car keys and gold card so you can get whatever you need.”

"Rhet, this is…I don’t know what to say. It's perfect, but I don’t know when I’ll be able to pay you back," Max said.

“As I said before, do not insult me. What’s mine is yours, Magdalena. There is never a need to pay me back. I only wish I could replace everything that was destroyed tonight.”

She took a step closer to him, then tipped up and kissed him, pleasantly surprised when he pulled her even closer and deepened the kiss. Wrapping her arms around his neck, she slid her tongue along the seam of his lips, taking full advantage the second he parted them enough for her to slide her tongue inside.

She couldn’t help but frown when he suddenly stepped away, holding her at arm’s length. “I wish I could stay, but my brothers and sister need me. You’ll be safe here but lock the doors and take the dogs with you if you go out.”

Once he left, she sank onto the edge of the bed and released a long breath. It seemed she was really going through with this, her life felt completely out of control, and as much as she usually needed control, she didn’t have a problem accepting Rhet’s help...for now.
